According to the New York Post, Orlando Police Chief Eric Smith stated at a press conference that the first reports of gunfire were received in the vicinity of Central Boulevard and Orange Avenue. Minutes thereafter, there was another report of gunfire near Orange Avenue and Washington Street.
The deadly Orlando shooting happened outside The Block, a nightlife district with seven different clubs where hundreds of people had congregated for Halloween celebrations. The 6 injured people were taken to nearby hospitals for “further treatment,” Smith said. The victims are in the age range of 19 to 31. As of right present, they are said to be stable.
As rescue vehicles and police cars swarm the scene, people can be seen running through downtown streets in videos posted by Fox35 and other social media platforms. The culprit of the Orlando shooting, Jaylen Dwayne Edgar, 17, was apprehended by police shortly after the event. After spotting the teenage shooter, a nearby police officer pushed him to the ground and swept his legs from under him before more officers leaped into the pile. “This is still an active investigation,” Smith added, referring to the teen’s prior arrest for grand theft in 2023. We will provide you with another update when we obtain additional details.
When Edgar reached downtown Orlando, he was not observed going inside any of the clubs. He is thought to be the only suspect and was carrying a firearm. At the press conference, Smith proceeded to play several of the incident’s films. The guy was spotted strolling with a group in one of the videos. He took out a gun a few seconds later and shot an unwary victim at close range.
Smith stated of the officers, “They’re always prepared to act and always trained.” None of the officers turned away when they heard the gunfire. Instead, they deviated from the norm. Since most of them had some cover between them, they began scanning the area to see what was happening before moving and taking action to keep everyone else safe. I’m really proud of these cops for doing what they do.
As authorities try to secure the area, the Orlando Fire Department is also working with the police on the situation, which is being closely watched.
There is currently no additional information available regarding the number of victims or possible culprits. The investigation is still going on.
The Orlando Police Department also announced on X (previously Twitter) that Chief Eric Smith will give a press conference at OPD Headquarters at 4:45 a.m.
